A year after the pandemic began and virtual learning became the norm, the inequities in higher ed have become more apparent than ever — and the calls for equity ever more urgent. Colleges recognize that creating more diverse student populations on campus is a key step, not only in the undergraduate community, but in graduate programs as well. What can colleges do to recruit and retain more minority students?
To examine this issue, a panel of leading professionals and practitioners in diversity and inclusion will join The Chronicle for an hour-long discussion of the steps needed to finally make inroads on this pivotal issue in higher ed today.
- What special considerations must be made to effectively reach students at the master’s and PhD levels?
- What new approaches are emerging as a result of today’s virtual environment?
- How can colleges continue to advance their DEI mission amid uncertain budgets?
Panelists include:
- Jabbar Bennett, Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer, Professor of Medicine, College of Human Medicine, Michigan State University
- Robert Bernasconi, Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Philosophy and African American Studies, Penn State University
- Robin Garrell, President, the CUNY Graduate Center
- Kimberly Harris, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, Marquette University
- Damon L. Williams, Jr., Assistant Dean, Diversity and Inclusion, The Graduate School, Northwestern University
